Gatekeeping Is Hurting Your Business
I had a conversation with a podcast host recently about being a guest on their show, and one of the things they shared was they loved having me on because I don’t gatekeep and truly just want to share what I know. It got me thinking…Where did gatekeeping come from and why do people feel the need to do it? Even though it can feel like a form of protection, it’s usually done out of fear, control or a scarcity mindset.
But the truth is, gatekeeping information actually does more harm than good.
When you’re a guest on a podcast, speaking on a stage, or even just posting online, sharing what you know isn’t a business risk, it’s a growth strategy.
People want to know you - your thoughts, your ideas, your expertise, your personality. You can’t accurately demonstrate that if you withhold.
Transparency builds trust. Sure, some people may take your insights and do their own thing. FINE. WHO CARES. LET THEM! They’re not meant for you. Orrrr, they’ll quickly learn they can’t DIY it and will reach out later.
Sharing information is a way to help people do better, be better. It also furthers you as an expert in your field.
Most business concepts or ideas aren’t new - but your approach is unique to you. It’s what makes you different, what makes you stand out.
Reminder: A scarcity mindset says, “If I give too much away, I’ll have nothing left.” An abundance mindset says, “The more I share, the more opportunities I create.”
The more you put your knowledge out there, the more people trust you, refer you, and want to work with you. Verbal and written content isn’t about giving away the whole business, it’s about showing people why they want to work with you in the first place. Your knowledge isn’t what makes you valuable, your ability to help people apply it is.
So stop gatekeeping. Get out there and share what you know. The right people will always find their way to you.
