Rest is Important!

Yes I said it! Rest is important. Period. Our culture glorifies burn out and the go-go-go mentality, but that’s not actually healthy AND it doesn’t serve anyone well. There will always be things to do, things to get done and someone who needs something. But when you’re prepping for your week and looking at your schedule, consider how much time is already being demanded of you. What time is already being managed FOR you. How busy your schedule is already looking. Are there certain days where you can incorporate some down time? What about self-care? Can you try to include breaks throughout your day so you have time to rest and recharge?

One of the biggest benefits of being an entrepreneur is that you are in charge of your own schedule. YOU get to decide how you want to spend your time. So take a look at how you’ve been spending your time and see if it aligns with what’s important to you. If it is, excellent! If it’s not, it’s time to make some changes.

If taking breaks and resting is difficult for you, start small. Take 10-15 minutes a couple times a day. Sit down, close your eyes, meditate, stretch. Keep it low-key. But start somewhere. It’s in this downtime that your mind is actually able to flourish. It can get creative. It starts thinking outside the box. You might find inspiration for something new. These breaks are beautiful and necessary.

Once you start getting more comfortable with them, you can begin to make them a bit longer; perhaps working up to 45 minutes to an hour a day! Wouldn’t that be wonderful? An hour to yourself. An hour to rest and recharge. An hour in between networking events or meetings. I understand that the demands on people’s time can vary widely, and some may not have the luxury of taking an hour to themselves. That’s OK. Just work in what you can and try to do it every day.
